Ex-LibrisFrederick Wiseman

New York’s public library is a house with many faces. The now 87-year-old award winning documentary filmmaker Frederick Wiseman produces another stunning piece with his latest documentary about the renowned institute. An ode to the multifaceted importance of a place that we too often take for granted.

In this film, which is over three hours long, Wiseman captures the many stories that live in and around this institute. In his typical quiet, observing style he shows the various branches, in the different city districts, that attract a most diverse crowd. Each with their own background and motivation. One person is looking for relaxation, the other craves knowledge. What connects them is that in these digital times they choose the library as a refuge, confirming its status as a democratic institution.
