Highway ConfessionsElsbeth Fraanje
A loving, at times funny and visually delicious mosaic film about churches in a very unlikely place: along the German motorways, crammed between fast food restaurants and petrol stations. An unexpected place for intimate confessions.
A highway church: 'a Christian church in the vicinity of a motorway, which is specially equipped for temporary reflection and for the motorist to pause and think'. In times when churches attract fewer and fewer souls, these small chapels welcome about 2 million visitors a year.
Director Elsbeth Fraanje puts the spotlight on all kinds of people: the local people who take care of the chapels as well as passing travelers, and also the cleaning ladies who can’t help judging the messages people have written in the 'wish books'. Both believers and non-believers are covered and show the soothing effect these churches can have on people in search of comfort, a listening ear and happiness. Fraanje's portrait results in a loving mix of stories of passion and love, but also of fear and everyday grind. The sophisticated cinematography and sound design wrap these stories in an intimate and mysterious atmosphere.
