Juul's EarsPhilippe Cortens, Bob Maes, Carlo Dieltjens

A terrific portrait of Juul Anthonissen - who passed away in 2008 - and his unique jazzclub Hnita Jazz Club, where many jazz legends performed. The film uses archive footage, old recordings and exclusive interviews to show how one man’s limitless passion for music put Heist-op-den-Berg on the map, in terms of jazz.

In the early fifties, a young Juul Anthonissen trades his beloved race bike for a record player and a collection of vinyl records. He has been bitten by the jazz bug, and will love the genre his entire life. Having become a proper connoisseur, he starts the Hnita Jazz Club. Chet Baker, Keith Jarrett, Charles Mingus, Sun Ra, Bill Evans, Toots Thielemans, Dexter Gordon, Archie Shepp, Art Blakey, Pharoah Sanders, Hank Mobley, Woody Shaw, Freddie Hubbard, Clark Terry… they all performed at this tiny jazz club in Heist-op-den-Berg, and to this day the place attracts the very best international jazz musicians. Juul’s Ears is an ode to Juul Anthonissen, who passed away in 2008, and his unique jazz club. Archive footage, old recordings and exclusive interviews with Sonny Rollins, Toots, Marc Ribot, Archie Shepp, Gregory Porter, Jules Deelder and Daan show how one man’s limitless passion for music lead to some fantastic and one of a kind moments. The film is followed by a mini concert by DAAN.
