Free to RunPierre Morath

Once upon a time there was a world in which running was something weirdos, eccentrics and protesters did. Where it was forbidden for women. Until the hype broke loose and we all became runners.

From the streets of New York to the paths in the Swiss Alps, from São Paulo to Paris, Beijing or Sydney, men and women, champions and amateurs ... every year millions of people run. There are prestigious and grand marathons, there is the neighbor who jogs through the park, but running is firmly established in our society.

Less than fifty years ago, things were quite different: running was reserved for men, limited to stadiums and there were strict, sometimes absurd rules. On the basis of unpublished testimonies and archival footage 'Free to Run' tells the amazing story of running, specifically over the past 50 years. It shows the struggle women faced to be allowed to run, the emergence of cross-country running and marathons to the booming business running is today. Or how a marginal and militant act became a universal passion.

Director Pierre Morath - an avid runner since his 15th birthday - combined his training as a historian with his passion for running. The history of running serves as a fascinating mirror of important social developments in recent decades. "Free to Run” is an inspiring tribute to running and the testimony of a change in mentality over the years.
