DOCVILLE 2011
Saturday May 7th, the seventh edition of the international documentary film festival DOCVILLE (Leuven, Belgium) announced its awards. The American documentary Marwencol was awarded Best International Documentary. Marwencol directed by Jeff Malmberg tells the story of a man who was beaten into a coma and then, as a kind of therapy builds an imaginary Belgian miniature WWII era-town, populated by Barbie and GI Joe dolls. This prize is the 14th festival award for Marwencol. The film was previously awarded at Silver Docs, Hot Docs and Vienna International Film Festival.
In the category “Con-Science”, films about contemporary social issues, the award went to the Dutch film Rainmakers. Rainmakers, a film by director Floris-Jan Van Luyn, tackles the conflict between economic growth and environmental interest in booming China. This was not the first award for Rainmakers neither as the film previously won the Green Award at the Sheffield International Film Festival
L’Ile Déserte, directed by Steve Thielemans was voted by the jury as Best Belgian Documentary. The film had its world premiere on May 3rd at DOCVILLE. In 2006 Thielemans won a “Wildcard” from the Flanders Audiovisual Fund with his short film The Substitute. The award money enabled him to create this L’Ile Déserte.
