Every hour, an amount of plastic that could fill 11 Olympic swimming pools ends up in the sea. It hardly breaks down or breaks down very slowly and can float with the currents for years. It falls apart into smaller and smaller pieces, microplastics, that have harmful effects on life in our ocean. One of the solutions being put forward is the development and use of bioplastics.
