Les Dames Blanches
Camille Ghekiere Belgium 2024 61 min.
Simeon, a young Dominican man, begins an internship as a caregiver at a retirement home in Ghent, Belgium. His approach to elderly care sets him apart from his colleagues, who don't quite see things his way. As he builds a warm connection with some endearing old ladies, he begins, strengthened by the advice of his late grandmother, to question the rigid approach to elder care expected of him.

In 2021, director Camille Ghekiere won a coveted VAF Wildcard category documentary with her short film Newcomers, in which she playfully sketched how Southern newcomers deal with love and seduction in her rather grey and cold country Belgium. With her featurefilm Les Dames Blanches, she reveals the painfully rigid view of elderly care in the West, with brutal honesty, enormous empathy, an unflinching sense of (sometimes dark) humour and a touch of magical realism.
