The Governor

Danel Elpeleg Israel 2024 71 min.

An intriguing investigation into the director's grandfather's hidden past as ‘military governor for the control of Arab civilians’ after the founding of Israel. Personal and political history are closely intertwined as family secrets surface in this gripping historical narrative.

Zvi Elpeleg, the director's grandfather, was a military governor after the establishment of the state of Israel. He became responsible for controlling Arab citizens within Israel. The positive image Zvi always exuded slowly crumbles as the director learns more about his true deeds as an authority figure, both in his military and family life. As she uncovers family secrets, the personal and the political intertwine, and everything turns out to be about control. A deeply personal documentary that paints a portrait of a man and a country that has been constantly and obsessively concerned with controlling others. Director Danel Elpeleg won the Prize for Best Documentary at the Jerusalem Film Festival with her film.
