2m²

For those who live between two countries and two cultures, one ultimate question inevitably arises: on which two square meters do you want to be buried? Is this the final answer to the difficult question of where you truly belong?  An intimate look at the delicate balancing act between faith and commerce a Turkish funeral director in Belgium and his counterpart in Turkey have to do.

This documentary follows Tayfun, a Turkish funeral director in Belgium who assists families from the diaspora in repatriating their loved ones. Many ultimately prefer 2m² of land in their country of origin to a grave in Belgium. In his prestigious and sometimes logistically challenging business, Tayfun balances capitalism and faith. But his work does not end at the cargo doors of the airport. That is where the journey of his counterpart in Turkey begins, who is firmly convinced that every Turk should ultimately rest in their own soil.

Director Volkan Üce poses pressing questions—with a touch of dry humor—about identity, migration, and how these issues continue to have an impact even after death.
