Fantastique

Marjolijn Prins Belgium, France 2025 71 min.

Fourteen-year-old Fanta has to bend over backwards, both literally and figuratively. She tries to combine caring for her sick mother with school and her greatest passion: training at the acrobatic circus Amoukanama, in the hope of being part of their next big tour. By trying to combine all these expectations, Fanta begins to doubt what she really wants.

Reality and magic flow seamlessly together in this poetic coming-of-age documentary. With spellbinding imagery and a touch of magical realism, director Marjolijn Prins mirrors Fanta’s inner world.

In 2019, Prins encountered the Amoukanama Circus, which bridges African and European circus traditions, and traveled with them to Guinea. There she met Fanta, the youngest and only girl in the troupe, driven by her dream of becoming an acrobat. Fantastique approaches emancipation as a process shaped by tradition, economics, and social structures. In this hybrid documentary—where fantasy and everyday life intertwine—Fanta gradually finds the strength to ask questions and assert herself during the fragile transition from childhood to adulthood.
