Girls and Honey

Pieter-Jan De Pue Belgium, Ukraine 2017 8 min.

Svetlana and Anatoli are the last remaining residents of the war-torn village of Pesky, located on the front line in eastern Ukraine. Despite the daily challenges and bombings, they refuse to abandon their honeybees.

For two years now, this 72-year-old couple has been living as the only remaining residents in a village that had more than 3,000 inhabitants before the outbreak of war between pro-Russian rebels and the Ukrainian army. The electricity, water, and gas supplies have been destroyed, and the couple faces daily bombardments. Only Anatoli's bees still move freely across national borders. This short documentary follows the life of this couple who refuse to leave behind their most precious possessions—and with them, their past, their land, and their home.
