Happy birthday!
Justine Cappelle Belgium 2025 9 min.
Portrayed through the grainy glow of baby monitor images, this intimate short captures a daughter and mother both at their own milestone: their 30th and 60th birthdays. In her mother’s bed, they revisit a painful truth — that she was once unwanted. A conversation unfolds before our eyes about existence, worth, and the right to take up space.

When her mother is 60 years old — exactly double the age at which she once gave birth — a filmmaker revisits her own beginning. Shot entirely through the unblinking eye of a baby monitor, the film shows a disarmingly honest exchange between mother and daughter. Together they talk through the complex bond between a mother and her child, giving way for questions to arise. What does it mean to exist when you were never meant to? What pressure arises when one feels the need to prove their worth to justify their presence, their voice, their existence?
