I, Poppy
Vivek Chaudhary India 2025 82 min.
In rural India, elderly Vardibai carefully tends her poppy field, as the harvest provides her with much-needed income. As is often the case, it remains uncertain until the last moment whether she will receive permission to harvest. These permits are controlled by corrupt officials who manipulate the system to their advantage. Her son Mangalil takes on corruption, at the risk of his activism making everything even more difficult. I, Poppy won the award for Best International Documentary at the prestigious Hot Docs festival.

Filmed over five years, this intimate and visually striking documentary captures the diverging paths of pragmatic poppy farmer Vardibai and her activist son. They embody different responses to systemic oppression and corruption: silent endurance for the sake of survival, or active resistance with all the risks that entails. Amid the lush poppy fields, mother and son bicker as Mangalil’s actions carry far-reaching consequences. A layered story about justice, family, and the human cost of standing up to institutional power.
