Ik sta even stil en dat is een hele vooruitgang.

In the 'bucolic' Watou, a monumental, tottering creature awakens: the embodiment of our desire for ‘more and better’. This kinetic sculpture, a cross between a prehistoric mammal and an irrigation machine, compels passers-by to pause. Is this the way forward, or is pausing for a moment the biggest leap we can take?

“I am standing still for a moment, and that's a great leap forward.” Inspired by this quote from Bertolt Brecht, Laura Vandewynckel explores the paradox of our unstoppable drive for progress. In collaboration with engineers from the VUB, she created a hybrid, kinetic monster: a twelve-legged sculpture that plows through the West Flemish landscape with roaring force. The work cuts off the viewer's path and breaks through the mantra of ‘faster and more efficient’. While the inhabitants of the border region beg for action and infrastructure, Vandewynckel asks where this arrow pointing to the sky will really take us in a world with ecological limits.

The result is a polyphonic video work that focuses on the confrontation between man, machine, and landscape. Meanwhile, the physical sculpture lies sleeping like a fragile, exhausted beast in a dusty attic.
