In Loving Memory of Fleeting Light
Laura Van den Eede Belgium, Italy 2025 15 min.
More than forty years ago, almost all the fireflies that once flickered so abundantly above the Italian countryside disappeared. In a small village in northern Italy, a mother and daughter set out in search of memories of that vanished light. Along the way, they encounter all kinds of phantoms from the past, both within their family and in the village at large.

Recent LUCA alumna Laura Van den Eede's bachelor's film reflects on ecological mourning, which she closely intertwines with her own family history. The absence of fireflies becomes a lens through which other forms of loss come to the surface: vanishing traditions, a village that is rapidly depopulating, and the death of her great-grandfather. Central to the film is a masked character: Brighella, played by the filmmaker's mother. This character acts as a guide through the story, which is told through intimate conversations, archival footage, and the voices of the town's residents.
In Memory of Fleeting Light is an ode to everything that no longer glows, but above all a cinematic time capsule, where the past is given a peaceful place to live.
