Small Dogs Bark Loud

How do you deal with grief and sadness as a young teenager? Twelve-year-old Tuni gives us a glimpse into her playful world, where she hears animals talk and makes a bucket list. It helps her come to terms with her brother's suicide and her mother's terminal cancer. A heartwarming tribute to children's resilience and the healing bond with pets.

When the world becomes too much for her, Tuni finds comfort in her dog Salto, whom she got a few months after her brother’s suicide. He soon becomes her best friend and is even allowed to sleep beside her. With a homemade bucket list, she gives direction to days that sometimes feel heavy: dancing in the rain, starting small ventures with friends, and teaching Salto to bark less loudly so they can go on vacation together. Yet one item on the list requires particular courage: visiting her brother’s grave.

Small Dogs Bark Loud tenderly—and with a touch of magic—invites us into Tuni’s world, showing how imagination, friendship and the love of animals create space to make grief bearable. A moving film about mourning, but above all a love letter to life.
