The Python Hunt

Catching as many pythons as possible, that is the aim of an annual competition in which anyone who feels called to do so, can participate. This ten-day python hunt in Florida is a bizarre competition that attracts colorful characters from all over the world (including Belgium). In The Python Hunt, we may not be following the very best python hunters, but for sure the most intriguing ones - all with their own tactics, motivations and life story.

In the Everglades, a swampy nature reserve in southern Florida, there are far too many pythons. They are not a native species and their sheer numbers are threatening local biodiversity. Part of the government's control plan is to call on citizens to hunt the snakes themselves once a year in a real competition. Snake hunters come from far and wide, with some more colourful than others, to take part in the competition. A sometimes somewhat disturbing portrait of a bizarre tradition and a glimpse into the swampy underbelly of the American soul.
