Zachary Heinzerling’s remarkable debut explores the chaotic but engaging marriage of Japanese artists Ushio Shinohara and Noriko while they prepare for a joint exhibition. Ushio makes mixed-media sculptures and special 'boxing' paintings. Noriko lives in the shadow of her husband and wants to move beyond her role as his assistant. She makes drawings of their alter egos Cutie and Bullie. "Cutie and the Boxer” is a humorous but tender portrait of two artists seeking their own identity and was nominated for an Oscar.
