Etgar Keret: Based on a True StoryStephane Kaas, Rutger Lemm
Israeli writer Etgar Keret is known as a born storyteller who does not take reality too seriously. But how do you capture such a man in a documentary? By telling a crazy story: two of his Dutch fans try it in this very clever and smoothly told film.
Keret shot to fame with his extremely short fiction stories. In his daily life he likes nothing more than to tell anecdotes, possibly seasoned with just a pinch of imagination. When two Dutch superfans get the permission to make a documentary about the man, they decide to use his love for stories in their approach. For example, they integrate several short stories by using animation, reconstruct anecdotes and they try to find out, together with Keret, where his need to tell stories comes from.
The approach of the film is reminiscent of Howl, the experimental love letter to the life and work of Allen Ginsberg. In this case, however, Stephane Kaas and Rutger Lemm make a documentary that plays with the boundaries of the genre, in no small part thanks to their protagonist. Keret had received several offers from other documentary makers, but opted for this duo "because they wanted it so much, and at the same time they explained it so poorly."
