The life of the Ju / Hoansi tribe is under severe pressure. The nomadic hunter gatherers of the Kalahari Desert will have to adapt their ancient lifestyle. The Namibian Government has banned hunting, the endless plains of the Kalahari are now littered with fences and the tribe is forced to settle down in houses.

Director Simon Stadler is a historical anthropologist and is fascinated by ancient cultures and the changes they undergo. In "Ghostland" he turns the tables: what starts out as a look at their ancient culture turns into a compelling reflection on our own culture. The trip to Europe not only makes for a funny culture shock, almost like a documentary version of "The Gods Must Be Crazy." Gradually the study object becomes the explorer and the tourist attraction becomes the tourist. We face a mirror in which our modern rituals and "civilized" world suddenly  look very unusual. It is as if we encounter ourselves for the first time, through the eyes of an almost extinct, ancient culture.
