No Impact Man: The DocumentaryLaura Gabbert & Justin Schein

‘I’m so happy he’s passionate about something again’ says Michelle, the wife of Colin Beavan, at the start of her husband’s new project. As a New York family they embark on a year-long project to live “deliberately”. However, it seems she’s underestimated her husband’s ambitious plan. Because ‘no impact’ doesn’t only mean no car, no television, no public transport, vegetarian and biological food but also no elevator, no diapers for their daughter, no new clothes and no spring break holiday to the West Coast relatives. Not so much of a problem for Colin, but Michelle, who lives on a New York diet of coffee latte and takeout Chinese food, is having a hard time. The film is a document of what happens to a couple’s emotional life when they alter their entire existence. No Impact Man presents an intimate, emotional portrait of a family experiment that attracted major media attention.
