Spaceship EarthMatt Wolf
In 1991, eight people locked themselves up in Biosphere 2, a gigantic glass dome that recreated Earth's ecosystem, for two years. Nothing was allowed to come in, nothing went out. All food, water and oxygen had to be produced on site. Just as would be the case if humans would one day colonize other planets. A dive into one of the most fascinating experiments ever devised.
A desert, a tropical rainforest, a savanna and an ocean; Biosphere 2 had it all. The gigantic project was contrived by charismatic commune leader John P. Allen. When he met rebellious billionaire Ed Bass, his extraordinary dream came true and a team of eight "bionauts" was assembled. One of them was Belgian Mark Van Thillo, who would eventually play an important role in the unusual events that took place in the Biosphere. Director Matt Wolf tells this unimaginable story with compelling behind-the-scenes footage. The ups and downs of these eight people reveal a fascinating history that shows that a utopian dream is hard to reconcile with "big business", but also that persistent dreamers can move mountains.
