This Oscar-nominated documentary explores the paradox that characterizes contemporary China: a communist country that plays the card of capitalism like no other. The rise in prosperity in recent decades has been so enormous that the regime likes to flaunt 'the Chinese dream'. Forget the US, China is now the country where anyone can strike gold and which takes a global leadership position. An impressionistic portrait of the various shapes of the Chinese dream.
Just like the natural food chain, the economic chain of the Chinese dream starts with the smallest players: the workers who extract raw materials in the mines or work in huge factories on long production lines. The middle class continues to grow: a huge population of buyers and sellers, a class that is at the heart of consumer society. Finally, there is the elite, the super-rich who are always looking for new ways to satisfy their hedonism and escapism. Each level of this economic and social ladder rests on the previous one, with the real Chinese dream becoming reality for only a happy few.
