BrothersAslaug Holm
Norwegian filmmaker Aslaug Holm filmed her two sons over a period of eight years. She delivers a beautiful and original film about growing up, trial and error, dreams and brotherly love. 'Boyhood' in real life!
How can you take years of footage about two brothers growing up and make something that surpasses your average home video? Norwegian filmmaker Aslaug Holm managed just that. Mark and Luke were 5 and 8 years old when their mother started filming them in what could be called a documentary version of Boyhood. The two boys, each with their own personality, grow up before the eyes of the viewer, as you see them evolve from child to teenager.
Holms talent lies not only in stunning camera work, but in how she subtly demonstrates that small details can have a big impact on the relationship between the two brothers. She records their dreams and expectations, but also their worries and conflicts and even the influence of her camera on the family. The film is a tender registration of life itself, a beautiful portrait of human nature, poetic and yet authentic.
