Charleroi: Le Pays Aux 60 MontagnesGuy-Marc Hinant
A visual essay about an industrial city in all its facets. Charleroi, on the banks of the Sambre, is a sultry metropolis in which René Magritte, a homeless camp, advocates of a new urban design, deep red socialists, the discoverer of the Big Bang and the supporters of the Zebras intersect. Charleroi is facing the beginning of a new era, but no one knows exactly what that will look like.
Charleroi, the former epicenter of the European coal and steel industry, is a city in decline without a clear view of a better future. It is also the hometown of writer, music producer and filmmaker Guy-Marc Hinant. Memories from his childhood bring hidden places to light in the dark city. They are the poetic note in this quirky and eclectic history of Charleroi. The story of the glory and fall of the industrial wonder is intertwined with his personal traumas and silent childhood memories. It is a back and forth in time and space with the only constant being the lights of the city against the dark hinterland.
