Every teenage girl has her idol. In times of social media like Instagram, Facebook and Snapchat these idols are more accessible than ever, which makes for true obsessions. How can these girls be in love with guys they probably never meet in person?
Fan Girl is a short documentary about girls who are in love with the famous boys they follow on social media. Teenage girls obsessed with celebrities is a phenomenon that exists for years. By changing technology (social media, smartphones…), the relation between the girls and their idols also changes.
Liza Mandelup shows perfectly the illusions of these girls, without labeling them as crazy. The desire for connection even shows the humaneness behind the obsession. Fan Girl demonstrates how people become more and more dependent on social media and technology in their search for friends and relations.
