Jurytext: By shedding light on the heartbreaking truth—children sold, beaten, and denied education—the filmmakers reveal a harrowing practice that many would believe belongs only to the distant past. Yet the film goes beyond shock value, unearthing the cultural and spiritual justifications—personified by Mr. Lucky and a Maramba shaman—that continue to perpetuate these atrocities under the guise of divine will. The films sweeping drone shots of Sumba’s stunning landscapes contrast sharply with the grim subject matter, while Raquel Ferreira’s and Hendrickx’s thoughtful editing seamlessly balances intimacy and splendor, heightening the film’s emotional core. Ultimately, it is the compelling narrative, centered on local activist Jeremy Kewuan’s courageous mission to rescue three enslaved children, that makes the film not just an urgent call for social justice but also a perfect example of Belgian documentary filmmaking—and therefore deserving of the top honors at Docville. For its uncompromising exploration of hereditary slavery in West Sumba, Indonesia, where vestiges of Maramba, Kabihu, and Ata social classes still shape everyday realities, the award for best Belgian Documentary goes to “Slave Island” by Jimmy Hendrickx and Jeremy Kewuan.

Songs of Slow Burning Earth

Jurytext: This year’s line-up of films covered an impressive array of documentary styles: from pure verite, observational films to films that explicitly include the director of the film on-camera, to films that include reconstructed events. A repeated theme was the nature of truth - who is telling it, and who can you believe? The film that the jury has awarded the prize for Best International film is a film of unvarnished truth. It takes a subject that has been covered by a number of other filmmakers in recent years, but boldly presents an original perspective. Defying the expectations of a film about war, The Songs of Slow Burning Earth by Olha Zhurba shows almost nothing of the physical destruction reigned on Ukraine by Russia, but reveals the deeper emotional and psychic toll on the everyday people who must struggle with the consequences. Shot in a verite style without narration, we see a bus driver transporting evacuees who sobs as he has to return again and again to destroyed towns to evacuate children. A bread baker desperately trying to bake as many loaves as possible to feed the displaced families. People lining country roads, for miles and miles, kneeling in respect as a military transport passes bearing deceased soldiers, chanting “heroes never die.” Unsensational in style, the film derives its power from the unsentimental revelation of the lives of people far from the battle front who also courageously engage in their own battle to navigate their new reality.

its core, the film follows a courageous teacher who refuses to comply with the Putin regime’s
propaganda machine—an apparatus that seeks to transform schools into instruments of
indoctrination and military recruitment. This film is an extraordinary achievement in documentary
storytelling. It sheds light on a deeply troubling development in Russia, one that, disturbingly,
resonates far beyond its borders. The Docville Topics Award for 2025 is presented to Mr. Nobody

This ethical layer makes the film not only intriguing but also prompts reflection on the meaning and implications of scientific progress. It is particularly commendable how all these questions and themes are thoroughly explored and seamlessly integrated, resulting in a complete and satisfying whole.
Rather than imposing a single truth or viewpoint, the film embraces the complexity of existence and the science that seeks to understand it. With courage and intellectual curiosity, the filmmaker chooses to approach the mystery of life from various scientific perspectives, without turning the film into a personal manifesto.

Jurytext: The jury, consisting of Shane Smith, David Deprez, and myself, unanimously awards the Prize for the Best National Documentary to a remarkable, innovative, poetic and revealing film that ingeniously and playfully brings together history and music into a captivating audiovisual mosaic. It also serves as a complex yet entertaining and sometimes funny essay on how the past can serve as a mirror for the present. Furthermore, it is an extremely rare and highly original political film, about the interaction between colonisation and the Cold War, from a country where political cinema is nearly non-existent. Finally, we are very proud to honor a film that exhibits a outspoken love for jazz, sharp editing and the pursuit of the truth.

Jurytext: The documentary “A Storm Foretold” is the documentary that left us as a jury most astonished. Hannah Arendt already pointed out that the way people deal with power is crucial for world history. The documentary 'A Storm Foretold' shows us in a brilliant and terrifying way how incredibly hard power is when it is in the hands of a group of people who do everything they can to stay in power and who do not want to shying away from going far beyond the limits of a superpower whose democracy has never before been questioned. As Francis Fukuyama says, “Trumpism is not just a danger to America's democracy, but to democracy worldwide.” The documentary “A storm foretold” brings these dynamics into words and images in such detail. At the same time, it is also a clear, close-to-face exposure of those leadership figures in terms of betrayal, friendship, selfishness and vanity. This documentary literally almost killed the filmmaker, but the result is beautiful. That is why we want to award this documentary with the jury of Topic for the documentary of Topic 2024.

Jurytext: The jury wants to award the best scientific documentary to the movie that left the biggest impression on all of us. We were left puzzled, scared, and triggered—so much so that one of my fellow jury members even had a nightmare about it afterwards! The cinematic techniques were exceptionally effective in evoking these emotions. This movie touches upon important questions like the deep human desire for immortality, if technology could ever replace religion or how humans could turn death into business. Overall, we believe that everyone, especially younger people, should see this documentary to become more aware of the potential dangers and future implications of AI. Therefore, we present the award for best scientific documentary to "Eternal You" by Hanz Block and Mortis Riesewieck.

Jurytext: Waar wij als jury voor de nationale competitie gevoelig voor waren, waren die films waarin het
auteurschap en het maatschappelijk belang samenvallen met de kunst van het visueel vertellen.
Daarom is onze keuze voor beste Belgische documentaire gevallen op een filmverhaal dat ons
allemaal aangaat en een wereld toont die we misschien liever niet onder ogen zien. Het is een film
die een visueel bijzonder moeilijk territorium betreedt, maar met zoveel liefde en vernuft in beeld is
gebracht, dat we unaniem gegrepen waren. De ogenschijnlijk moeilijk doordringbare protagonisten
worden, dankzij het opmerkzame en esthetische oog van de makers, mensen waar we van gaan
houden. En ze bewijzen daarmee hoe belangrijk het is dat ook wanneer we in de nadagen van ons
leven verkeren, of wanneer we anders communiceren, we de volle aandacht verdienen. Daarom gaat
de prijs voor de Beste Belgische documentaire van Docville 2023 naar Marie De Hert en Ellen Pollard,
makers van Dag Ma.

Jurytext: We felt the international competition was really strong and varied in form, style and tone. However, one film in particular really blew us away. In a time where the background the perspective and intentions of the documentary maker are increasingly and necessarily questioned, the director in this film finds the right balance. The Invention of the Other. The film challenges us to examine our own sense of representation and narrative pace. In many ways it is an old school anthropological film, but such was the access and the extraordinary encounter with the Korubo people that it offers the audience what is at once like meeting with those from a far off planet, yet at the same time our dearest relatives. In short, it was a film that connected us, to us. It was truly an extraordinary other worldly experience.

Jurytext: De film waar we het meest van onder de indruk waren, had een adembenemende beeldvoering: close-ups van geïnterviewden werden afgewisseld met weidse, beschadigde landschappen en gestileerde silhouetten. En het was meer dan esthetiek: elk beeld ondersteunde het verhaal.
De prachtig akelige soundtrack deed dienst als het koor in een Griekse tragedie. Het beklemmende gevoel van deze film zal nog lang in ons blijven nazinderen in de wetenschap dat de strijd tegen het IS nog lang niet gestreden is. De winnende film toont de vaak besproken gevangengenomen IS-strijders op een baanbrekende, aangrijpende wijze. De winnaar van het onderdeel Topics 2023 is ROJEK.

Jurytext: De jury beseft hoe moeilijk het is, nu meer dan ooit, om een kwaliteitsvolle documentaire
over wetenschap te maken. Van de makers verwachten we dat ze de complexiteit van de
materie op een bevattelijke manier beschrijven, dat ze het proces van ‘aan wetenschap
doen‘ meenemen in de opbouw van hun film én dat ze oog hebben voor de
maatschappelijke en ethische consequenties van hun onderwerp. Als de makers er dan ook
nog in slagen om dit alles op een filmisch vernieuwende manier te doen, dan gaat de jury
overstag.
De documentaire ‘Make People Better’ vinkt alle bovenstaande criteria af. Het gaat om een
controversieel thema, het ingrijpen op het DNA van menselijke embryo’s via CRISPR met de
bedoeling immuniteit tegen hiv te verlenen. We krijgen in de film op een uiterst
professionele manier, inzicht op het wetenschappelijk bedrijf op hoog niveau, we volgen het
traject van het experiment. De documentaire heeft het karakter van een detective en is
opgebouwd rond de spanningen en verhoudingen tussen de belangrijkste actoren; de
Chinese onderzoeker, zijn internationale collega’s uit de academische wereld, de journalist
en de wetenschapsjournalist, de woordvoerder en de ethicus. De regisseur beseft als geen
ander dat er geen sluitende antwoorden zijn en dat ‘de waarheid’ in de nuance schuilt, zo
maakt hij ook van ons als kijker een onderzoeker.

Jurytext: Vincent Meessen’s JUSTE UN MOUVEMENT is a fascinating, nuanced and formally inventive account of the life of Senegalese Maoist activist Omar Blondin Diop. Taking an intriguing approach to the immediate post-colonial context of Senegal, the film boldly demonstrates the evolution of Diop’s revolutionary politics on his return to his native Dakar as he seeks to turn theory into action. Meessen working with both comrades of Diop as well as actors, musicians, performers and academics from modern-day Dakar, has made a film that fully articulates a desire for self-agency within the political present.
As a jury we were absolutely united in our belief that this brilliant and incisive documentary was the standout film of this year’s National Competition at Docville and warrants the highest commendation possible.

Jurytext: The winning documentary is a minimalistic film, which mainly takes place in one location. Since its world première this debut feature unfortunately only has become more relevant and real. Shot in black-and-white with sometimes terrifying sound and a beautiful musical soundtrack, this documentary is a highly immersive experience in which director Loup Bureau captures the daily lives of a group of young Ukrainian soldiers on the front line of the war in Donbass that started in 2014. Bureau does not just show the horrors of the trenches, he also shows the soldiers bonding over videogames, sweeping floors and cutting each other’s hair. Which makes the end result even more impactful. Especially now this film puts a mirror to the western world.

Jurytext: The jury is unanimous in its decision to give the award for the Conscience competition to a film about a man with a mission. The film shows great craftmanship in many respects: story and character development, access to the main character, camera work and editing. This results in a well-structured film, devoid of excess, in which we as viewers are allowed to witness a young man as he goes through trauma therapy, while also going through gender transition. With subtle visual cues the filmmaker shows the connection between the two. Despite his struggles, the film shows the main character as a strong and determined person, never as a victim. It is a positive story about overcoming trauma and finding yourself.

Jurytext: Bedankt Docville, om door te zetten en dit festival fysiek te laten plaatsvinden. De jury heeft ervan genoten om de rijke variatie aan stijlen, onderwerpen en engagementen van de filmregisseurs in een echte filmzaal te ontdekken. Binnen die weelde waren we unaniem het meest opgeslorpt door de toendra, de smeltende permafrost en de blootgekomen skeletten van het visueel en inhoudelijke gelaagde, tot de verbeelding sprekende Holgut. Met een cinematografische sterke mix van mythe en wetenschap, prehistorie en sciencefiction, orale vertelcultuur en hedendaagse beeldcultuur, creëert Liesbeth De Ceulaer een echte cinema-ervaring die niet koud laat.

De personages hebben een grote présence, de vormgeving is weelderig. Some Kind of Heaven is een film die op alle vlakken goed gemaakt en gestructureerd is. Met humor én intelligentie gaat de maker op de dingen door en raakt hij belangrijke thema’s aan.

Jurytext: President volgt de Zimbabwaanse verkiezingen vanuit het kamp van oppositielid Chamisa. De Filmmaakster kreeg toegang tot een van de hoofdkwartieren van het verkiezingsproces, de belangrijkste uitdager van Emmerson Mnangagwa. Hoewel het hoofdpersonage moet onderduiken, blijf je via de nevenpersonages zitten waar je als kijker moet zitten.
De film is klassiek chronologisch opgebouwd, maar het publiek krijgt telkens net voldoende tijd een gebeurtenis te verwerken en vervolgens meegezogen te worden in de volgende plotwending.
De jury was verrast van de kunde van de makers om de kijker ondanks het moeilijke onderwerp volledig mee te nemen in het Zimbabwaanse verkiezingsproces en je simpelweg te raken.

Jurytext: Bij andere documentaires drijven die gevoelens niet meteen aan de oppervlakte. Dan komt het erop aan om ze met creativiteit en fijnzinnigheid naar boven te halen en te verbeelden. En dat is waar onze winnaar in uitblinkt.
Waar gaat de film allemaal over?
Er is een actuele sociale laag: het verhaal van mensen die vluchten uit een onmenselijk bestaan en kiezen voor een leven met veel vraagtekens.
Maar dat is enkel de oppervlakte.
Daarnaast gaat het over kapitalisme, en hoe de wilde dromen van ondernemers niet per se zaligmakend zijn.
Het gaat over arm en rijk, en hoe die vlak naast elkaar kunnen bestaan.
Het gaat over gemeenschap, en hoe mensen elkaar vinden.
Het gaat over tijd en ruimte, en hoe die twee elkaar beïnvloeden.
En het gaat zeker ook over hoe flexibel mensen zijn en hoe we ons zelfs aan de bizarste omstandigheden kunnen aanpassen.
Dit is vernieuwende, verrassende, poëtische, geestige en overtuigd optimistische cinema.

Jurytext: Als Jury van de Internationale Competitie hebben we gekozen voor 2 jonge makers in plaats van gevestigde waarden. De 2 makers zijn een vrouw en een man die 2 heel goede films hebben gemaakt, totaal verschillende films die de diversiteit van het documentaire genre
tonen.
Het is wellicht niet verwonderlijk dat we in deze tijd gekozen hebben voor 2 films waarin allebei intimiteit centraal staat. De ene film gaat over 2 personages die, ondanks dat ze in hun levens heel ver van elkaar staan, kiezen voor een onvoorwaardelijke vriendschap. De 2de film toont intimiteit op een meer cinematografische manier, binnen een extreme geloofsgemeenschap.
Na een hele lange discussie tussen de juryleden gekozen voor 2 makers elk op hun eigen
manier risico’s hebben genomen: de winnaar is THE PAINTER AND THE THIEF en de Special
Mention gaat voor FAITH.

Jurytext: De juryleden van Weten & Geweten vielen unaniem voor een documentaire die de mechanismen van fraude blootlegt in een spannende film die je meesleept als een politiethriller. Onze winnaar toont een hoopvolle, menselijke strijd voor gerechtigheid door in te zoemen op de mechanismen van corruptie in een wereld waar macht en geld meedogenloos slachtoffers maken. De documentairemakers volgen drie gedreven onderzoeksjournalisten van een sportkrant die opkomen voor slachtoffers van gesjoemel met ontsmettingsmiddelen na een brand in een discotheek in Boekarest. En dat allemaal zonder één streepje achtergrondmuziek.

Jurytext: We unanimously selected the film that for us had the most surprising theme. A film that combined a modern visual style with an intriguing story that can appeal to a wide audience. A film that shows an overwhelmingly disturbing struggle and clash of cultures for a generation of unemployed youth in Ghana who mine a treasure trove of information found in the toxic electronic waste dumped there by the West, with some surprising twists of internet fraud aided by traditional African rituals. For us the best film of this Belgian selection was SAKAWA, the first feature documentary by director Ben Asamoah.

Jurytext: Het vakmanschap en de techniek van de winnende film waren merkbaar al in de eerste seconde, in een heerlijke scène. We keken naar een hoog technisch niveau, opvallend wegens de keuze van de zwart-wit-fotografie, maar dat stond nooit in de weg van het verhaal. Die hele specifieke keuze voor zwart-wit werd een “non issue”. Er was een duidelijk merkbare warme band tussen de regisseur en de mensen die ze portretteerde (de inwoners van Monnikenheide). Dat kwam allemaal heel authentiek over, er was nooit een geforceerde karakterisering. De film is ook heel oprecht, weet alle valkuilen van sentimentaliteit te ontwijken. Wij als jury hebben unaniem een grote bewondering voor de constructie van de scènes en hoe de speciaal gecomponeerde muziek daarbij is gebruikt. Daarbij bleef de focus altijd op de personages. Kortom: wat een vreugd om te zien, deze film!

Jurytext: We’ve decided to give our jury’s main award to a documentary depicting day-to-day work of a modern-day hero, a somewhat suicidal healer of the country torn apart by seemingly never ending war. The film let us witness how this insanely brave man digs out deadly danger from dry soil; his mission is to demine houses and fields, his tool are a simple knife, cutters and bare hands. The Conscience Jury award goes to beautifully told thriller documentary The Deminer, incisive account of the acute sense of futility in paralyzed Iraqi society, amazingly put together by Hogir Hirori a Shinwar Kamal from hundreds of hours of home video footage.

Jurytext: All of the jury for the National Selection were very impressed by the quality and the diversity of the filmmaking in the category. Before we announce the winner we would like to give an Honourable Mention to 2 projects.
Unfortunately there can only be one winner. For us, this film had an important message to share. It shone a light on a phenomenon that extends far beyond the parameters of this film. What made this documentary special for us was the gentle intimacy it achieved with its subjects, in a difficult environment to film. The result was touching, shocking, entertaining and thought-provoking. We are delighted to say that the winner is Burning Out.
