Enfants Du Hasard
Thierry Michel, Pascal Colson België 2017 100 min.
In the Cheratte district of Liège, near the old coal mines, most students in the village school have a migration background. For the 11-year-old students of Miss Brigitte, the big world starts to beckon. A heart-warming fly-on-the-wall portrait of a super teacher.

For a whole school year we follow the class of Miss Brigitte. She pays a lot of attention to the way her students develop their own identities, with all due respect for their background. Especially after the attacks of 22 March, the children ask themselves and each other questions about faith, the future and tolerance. Nothing can temper their impetuous zest for life. It is up to their inspiring teacher to guide them in the right direction. Enfants du Hasard seems to have some similarities with the Dutch gem De Kinderen van Juf Kiet. After all, both films revolve around amazing teachers and their mostly immigrant pupils. In this Walloon documentary, however, these pupils are not children of refugees but second or third generation migrants. Their search for a place in society is fortunately often heart-warming, not in the least thanks to the help of the teacher.
