Without any experience, knowledge or scientific training ('an open mind, a passion for knowledge, patience and love for animals' were the requirements) she applies herself to the study of primate behavior. National Geographic sends their best nature filmmaker, Hugo van Lawick, to make a portrait of this special woman. He captures not only the chimps, but aims his camera at her too. The budding romance between Jane and Hugo is reflected in beautiful images straight out of paradise. The naivety and innocence of the sixties are also reflected in the unique footage. Only in 2014 was this cinematic treasure, more than 100 hours of beautifully warm and tender 16 mm material, found in the National Geographic archives. Brett Morgen, who also made Cobain: Montage of Heck, was given the dream assignment to turn it into a film. Philip Glass composed the music. Together with the sober commentary of Jane Goodall (who is 83) they created a particularly touching and wonderful film.
