Closing Time

Three o'clock at night in Taipei, a city that never sleeps. At a busy intersection Mr Kuo and his wife have a simple food stand, where they cook for anyone who braves the night. An infinite ballet of night owls, hurried suppliers, fleeting conversations in a rainy, neon-lit anonymous corner of the city creates an intriguing, hypnotic viewing experience.

Under the fluorescent light of a viaduct, even in the middle of the night, there is still a lot of activity. Kuo and his wife run their simple eatery, scooters zip through the jumble of merchandise, bright red fish in an aquarium give each other kisses. Director Nicole Vögele calmly registers, wide shots are interspersed with close-ups. Sometimes the images are humorous, like when a stray dog ??quietly waits at a crossing until the pedestrian light turns green. Sometimes it takes a while before we understand what or who we are looking at exactly, but the hypnotic rhythm continues to intrigue. Closing Time has already won several prizes, including the Special Jury Award at the prestigious Locarno film festival. A fascinating and playful viewing experience that takes you to the other side of the world.
