Sisterhood

Sophie Dros Nederland 2022 71 min.

Do women still need feminism in 21st century Western Europe? What has changed in recent decades? What remains persistently present? Are there brand new painful issues? A candid film for men and women about what it means to be a woman in our society.

Inspired by Simone de Beauvoir's feminist essay "The Second Sex", filmmaker Sophie Dros enters into a conversation with four female contemporaries and a group of young girls to find out what it currently means to be a woman in Dutch society. The experiences of the two different generations show what has changed or is changing, and what problems are still persistently present. They share universal stories about ideals and self-image, taboos and inequality, connection and empathy, violence and fear. Nothing new for many women. But when Dros involves the male crew in the conversations, it becomes clear how important it is to share experiences and listen to each other.
