Chronically Ignored

Although myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome  (ME/CFS) was classified as a neurological disorder by the WHO in 1969, it remains widely misunderstood in politics, the medical field, and society to this day. The number of people affected has risen dramatically in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. Will this lead to a shift in how ME/CFS is perceived?

CFS continues to be neglected on many levels. Those who suffer from it are stigmatized and often referred to psychological treatment, no effective medication or real therapy exists. Before the pandemic, the number of people living with ME/CFS worldwide was estimated at at least 17 million; During and after the pandemic, millions more have been affected – the WHO estimates that 36 million people in Europe alone are living with Long COVID.

Director Sibylle Dahrendorf herself has been living for years with a range of multisystemic illnesses. Without treatment and confined to her bed, she can only communicate with the outside world and with scientists via social media. She is supported by director Daniela Schmidt-Langels, who travels, conducts interviews with experts around the globe, and seeks to confront those responsible in politics and the healthcare system with the reality of the situation.
