Tussen broers

Tom Fassaert The Netherlands, Belgium 2026 106 min.

Rob and René, both in their seventies, are brothers and polar opposites. One was a psychologist for many years, the other a psychiatric patient with a compulsion to collect things. Since the death of their mother, they have been in closer contact with each other. While trying to clean up René's cluttered house, they also set out to discover their unknown family history. A tragicomic and moving family documentary about the contrast between chaos and order, madness and normality, loyalty and autonomy.

Dutch filmmaker Tom Fassaert—son of Rob and nephew of René—won dozens of international awards for A Family Affair in 2015. This time, he turns his camera toward the unusual dynamic between his father and uncle.

What begins as a tragicomic story about their backgrounds as psychologist and psychiatric patient becomes a moving search for the father who left them in a children’s home as toddlers and vanished from their lives. An intimate family portrait that deftly balances lightness with the question of whether intergenerational trauma can be broken.
