Tussen de golven
Britt Vanhaelen Belgium 2026 15 min.
Tussen de golven is about rediscovering yourself, becoming more resilient, and boosting your self-confidence riding a surfboard in the sea. Sana shows that girls have the same rights as boys—something that is far from self-evident in her native Afghanistan.

In Tussen de golven we get to know Sana (11), who follows a surf-therapy trajectory together with 10 other children. It soon becomes clear that learning to surf is not an easy task. More than once she finds herself below the water's surface, untill she learns to wait for the right wave. Sana is very persevering. She wants to learn to surf, no matter what it takes, because this is something she would have never been allowed to do in her country of birth, Afganistan, all because of being a girl. Here she can and that is what makes every attempt, every fall, meaningful. Her surfboard becomes a place where she finds courage and pride.
