The Union of Directors traditionally joins the program to offer a filmmaker’s perspective on the documentary landscape. This year, the focus is on time: the overall length of a project, the duration of the creative process and its various stages, the running time of a film, and the difference between short and long versions. When is a film too long? Or too short? Why is a shorter cut often requested for television? Is that easily achieved? And do longer documentaries still find their place in today’s circuit?
