The Night

Steffan Strandberg Noorwegen 2017 63 min.

In this autobiographical film, Norwegian Steffan Strandberg dives deep into his past, looking for memories of his alcohol-addicted mother. An intimate film beautifully illustrated with animation and archive footage - about a crucial night in what looks like an idyllic Norwegian village.

The memories Strandberg is looking for largely revolve around a decisive night during his childhood. A night that would forever change his life and his brother’s life. The more he digs through his memories, the more questions arise about his mother’s love. Was there love? And could he, in his turn, love his mother? In his previous film Heaven Behind The House, Strandberg also discussed his mother’s death and this time refined it into a visual puzzle that connects his youth, represented by archive footage and animation, with who he is now. The director already has a number of short films and a mini-documentary series on his list of achievements. Here he pays tribute to a trajectory that can last a lifetime: coming to terms with the past.
